Artificial Intelligence

What’s my take on A.I.

AI presents the most significant opportunity and risks for the future of business, work, and humankind in general. Governments, companies, and individuals all need to understand what AI is (and what it’s not) and how it will positively and negatively impact them.

From where I sit in the technology and AI ecosystem, I believe any company, government, and individual can benefit from AI if they learn how to master the benefits and mitigate the risks that naturally stem from any new technology that is as all-encompassing as AI.

At the same time, there are massive risks for governments, companies, and individuals who are not proactive, realistic, and consistent in their AI goals. In the coming years, every government will need an AI strategy, every company will need to be AI-enabled, and every individual will need to be AI literate.

I’m exceptionally optimistic on the overall benefits from AI. That’s not to say that there won’t be issues that we have to face collectively as AI increasingly weaves itself into our lives, markets, and social structures. Since 2021, one of our main missions and investments has been focused on developing the Global AI Bill of Rights to help ensure that all of us retain our digital rights and sovereignty around the world.

What is Artificial Intelligence

In the simplest form, artificial intelligence can be grouped into a few broad categories: narrow/weak, general/strong, and superintelligence. All the AI you will interact with as of this writing in early 2022 would fall into the narrow field of AI. Narrow AI Systems can process a broad range of tasks at speeds unthinkable by humans. Understanding your voice commands, predicting the next word you will write, identifying unique solutions to problems, and chatting with you as a customer service agent are just some of the tasks that current AI systems are doing.

General and Super Intelligence are not currently operational, but that doesn’t mean brilliant engineers aren’t working to create them. So what are they?

A General AI System would be able to do anything that a human could do, only faster and more accurately. Unlike Narrow AI System, this system would be able to cross-apply knowledge, have master-level capabilities across domains, and would be as close to a hyper-skilled human replacement.

A Super Intelligent system is currently highly theoretical. However, advancements in technology tend to jump significantly and be sudden when they occur. So things could always change fast. These systems would have mastery of every domain at levels and speeds beyond comprehension and would be capable of breaking out of confined systems parameters since they would be completely autonomous.

How does it apply?

Without exaggeration, AI applies to everything. Every government, company, and individual (Yes, that means you too) will need a comprehensive AI strategy to excel today and tomorrow.

Governments need to develop a 360° AI Framework defining how the country will: implement AI, participate in the AI ecosystem, develop digital literacy campaigns to educate their populations to thrive in a world governed by AI, protect the digital rights of their citizens, and create an AI future for the country.

Companies need to understand how AI: could benefit their business, disrupt their business/industry, what they need to do to stay relevant in the future marketplace, and what other opportunities are uniquely available to them. Companies should design their business, data practices, and AI strategy to benefit from new legislation around the world.

Individuals need to master digital literacy for the current and future technologies. Learning the frameworks to understand how to cross-apply AI to different industries, technologies, problems, and changes in the world.
